Leah Lucas came to the art world in midlife as a novice after a hugely successful career as a horse trainer and equine therapist. Painting became an answer to the quest for “unfinished expression.” Originally planning to “dabble” with paints and brushes as a hobby, Lucas found the unbridled success and sales she has garnered has been a surprise to her and a delight to her collectors.

However, Richard often refers to it as ‘capturing mystery.’ As an artist trying to find my calling for authenticity, I am not sure that I fully understand how that happens. I paint what I love and what speaks to me, and what I find inspiring. What I am drawn to always comes down to one word: freedom. Freedom for me is synonymous with nature and the wide-open spaces, the objects and scenesI find so inviting on the prairies or in the hills of New Mexico.” —
