Wild and Wonderful

Ann Korologos Gallery highlights nature art by women artists.

Twenty women artists come together for an exhibition at Ann Korologos Gallery that explores the “joyous moments of life and landscapes across Colorado and the West.” Moving through the exhibition, viewers can witness the wonders of nature in all of its diverse forms, from wildlife art by Diana Woods, to bronzes by Lisa Gordon, to gentle landscapes by Linda Lillegraven.Linda Lillegraven, Moonrise on a Frozen Lake, oil on linen, 20 x 30”

“These women are not afraid to explore, to imagine, to create, to redefine, to compete,” says gallery owner Ann Korologos. “As a group, their work is wild, diverse, bold, refined, playful and exploratory.”

Lillegraven’s Moonrise on a Frozen Lake distills that quiet, ethereal moment at the very crest of twilight. “I knew I wanted to paint the full moon rising over water…The evening had to be clear and still, with moonrise right around the time of sunset. One of the small Laramie Plains lakes, Gelatt Lake, fit all the criteria, andDiana Woods, Bruno and Pie, acrylic on wood, 48 x 36”

I bundled up for the short drive out there. The rest was pure luck,” she says. “A cold snap had frozen the whole surface, which was still smooth, though as the temperature dropped the ice made unearthly sounds as it cracked and shifted. The last of the sun’s rays colored the distant mountains, though the lake was already in shadow. The rising of the moon, the setting of the sun, the freezing of a lake are all part of a timeless cycle, repeating through millennia.”

Gordon discusses her works in the show, which were inspired by traversing the trails of New Mexico. “The emotional bond between the horse and myself goes beyond simple childhood fascination. Horses have always been an intricate part of my life. I drew and mimicked them as a child; I owned and trained them as a teen; studied and revered them in college. Now as an artist it is natural that I sculpt the horse’s image,” she says. “My goal is to sculpt the horse with empathy and respect without getting bogged down in realities…By using tension and whimsy, and by juxtaposing figure and form, my sculptures are carving out a space of their own in the Western art world.”Lisa Gordon, Walken’ Walken’ Boots – VII, bronze, 6 x 7 x 3”

Titled Wild and Wonderful, the exhibition will be on view from March 1 to 31. Other artists in the show include Heather Foster, Veryl Goodnight, Donna Howell-Sickles, Amy Laugesen, Sandra Lee Kaplan, Peggy Judy, Sarah Lamb, Janet Nelson, Deborah Paris, Paula Schuette Kraemer, Kate Starling, Elsa Sroka, Allison Stewart, Sabrina Stiles, Marie Figge Wise, Dinah Worman and Sherrie York. —
