Santa Fe Art Auction will hold its Prints + Works on Paper sale this March, featuring an array of two-dimensional historic and contemporary works of art. “[This sale] is our wonderfully broad overview of works on paper, prints and multiples, both American and international, historic and contemporary,” says Gillian Blitch, Santa Fe Art Auction president, “From Gene Kloss, to Howard Cook and Will Shuster as well as Native American artists including Veloy Vigil, Woody Crumbo and R.C. Gorman.”
Barbara Latham (1896-1989), Five Men and Horse, woodcut, 65/8 x 9¼” Estimate: $500/700
John Nieto (1936-2018), Rabbit (After Dürer), 1994, serigraph, artist’s proof 20 of 45, 17½ x 22½” Estimate: $500/700
Artwork in the spring sale includes woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, serigraphs and more. Additional artists represented include Barbara Latham, Fritz Scholder, Carl Oscar Borg and Ila McAfee. Blitch adds, “We [also] have a very beautiful group of Janet Lipponcott monotypes…and a strong group of John Nieto’s lithographs.”
Especially exciting, she says, is a group of early Gallup posters. “We will have a marvelous group of ceremonial posters from the WPA art program of the early Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial posters. Most of them were illustrated by Louie Ewing…It will be exciting when it all comes together.”
Carl Oscar Borg (1879-1947), Hopi Kachina Priest (Shooyakos Kachina), etching, 10 x 8” Estimate: TBD
Janet Lippincott (1918-2007), Christmas Tree in India, 1998, monotype with chine collé, 24 x 24” Estimate: TBD
Ila McAfee (1897-1995), Ride ‘em Cowboy, lithograph, 13¾ x 9⅞” Estimate: TBD
The Prints + Works on Paper auction takes place March 13. The auction house is planning to hold another edition of its Signature Sale this June, and another Native American art sale will be held in August around Santa Fe Indian Market. —
