Western Art Collector magazine has changed the way artists, galleries and collectors connect, and it has closed the gap that previously existed in the Western art market. Our SOLD! section is where we highlight these connections, as well as other sales occuring within the market. Within this monthly section you can read just some of the feedback pouring into our office from coast to coast about art sales, including some made directly from the pages of the magazine. You never know—your next art purchase could be in this issue.
1. Western Trading Post sells stunning squash-blossom necklace
On January 8, Western Trading Post in Casa Grande, Arizona, sold a squash-blossom necklace as part of a four-piece set of jewelry. The lot realized $112,000, which is thought to be a world record price for a squash-blossom necklace. Accurate auction records on Native American jewelry are spotty at best, but many signs are pointing to this necklace being the most expensive squash-blossom necklace sold at auction. It was made by an unknown Navajo jeweler sometimes in the 1970s. It is made with Lander Blue turquoise, which is some of the most sought-after turquoise on the market. “We have thoroughly researched results from the biggest auction houses, we Googled it, and have also looked at auction results available to us through services we subscribe to, and have found no other squash-blossom necklaces sold at an auction for anywhere near this amount,” says Western Trading Post owner Jim Olson. “While we do know of a few gallery sales of squash blossoms selling in the six-figure range, we believe this one was the first one ever sold at a live auction for six-figures.”

2. Sell-out show at Coors for painter Ulrich Gleiter
Landscape painter Ulrich Gleiter was in Denver in January for the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale, and not only did he have strong sales, but he sold out early in the event. Gleiter, whose expressive landscape paintings show a mastery of light and color, was featured in Western Art Collector’s coverage in the January 2022 issue. —
