Booth Western Art Museum: Joshua LaRock

The Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia, has acquired a new Joshua LaRock painting from the Maine artist’s recent show at Maxwell Alexander Gallery. Joshua LaRock, Monument Valley, oil, 23 x 58”

The work, titled Monument Valley, shows several of the famous rock spires that are part of the Navajo Tribal Park that straddles Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. Eagle-eyed viewers might also see two horses and riders in the bottom-center of the painting. Their tiny presence helps show the scale of the massive spires. The work is also bathed in golden-orange light as the sun starts to set from behind the perspective of the painting. The color is so intense and the light so strong, that the work seems to call back to landscape painting’s rich past—Monument Valley feels more like Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt or Frederic Church than that of any other contemporary painter.

LaRock is one of the fastest-rising new stars in Western art. Originally starting as a contemporary portrait painter, the artist has found Western themes, subject matters, locations and people as ideal areas to explore within his work. And collectors have been supportive along the way. LaRock’s most recent new work was seen in February at the Masters of the American West exhibition at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. He will also be showing new work at Maxwell Alexander’s new show opening this month.
