"I walked down to the river early in hopes the trout would be hungry. Flyrod. Waiters. Pack. But I only got a few casts in before the view captured my attention. The sun, arriving over the ridge behind me, cast a warm morning glow on the whole valley." - Clint Howard

"The location is Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. I hiked up to Mills Lake very early in the morning. The alpenglow from the nearby peaks reflect in the lake indicating the start of a new day, while the log jam is still in evening light. The contrast of night into day, warms playing against the cools and the chaos of a log jam against a clean and peaceful water was so appealing to me. I did a small version of this painting about 20 years ago. I used it as my reference for this larger version." - Jake Gaedtke

"Every summer when I was a child, we would go out with my mom's side of the family, ten horses and twenty people, and every day we would make a big ride out into the mountains, to places you could never get to on foot. Often we came across scree slopes, and the only way home was down them. My mom talks about when I was little and our pony would not follow the rest of the horses across one, but chose its own path up and back down, and she had to trust that pony to take care of us in that moment. This painting is a little more of a wild scene, which seems to be on trend for what I create, but it reminds me of those days." - Renee Gould

"'The Lucky Spur' is painted with thinly applied darks and opaque passages - in places becoming the bench that holds the boots as a red kerchief casually spills over the bench, or opaque darks across the leather of the boots. The spur itself (actually there are two spurs, but the supporting one is in the shadow) is alight with a silvery presence that adds a kind of exclamation point to the worn boots. I was interested in featuring the back of the boots more so than the front as a way to explore the form, painting the pattern loosely.
