"It was winter, but the Buffalo River still called me down to the banks. The water was low and crystal clear. The sky was overcast, but the sun streamed through a break in the clouds here and there and lit up the winter grasses and the snow. The light created a wonderful atmosphere, a contrast between the cool shadows and water, and the isolated sun-warmed areas of the river bank." - Clint Howard

"I was intrigued with this subject in a few ways. 1) I liked the contrast between the geometric shapes of the hay bales and the irregular shapes of the piled snow on and around the bales. 2) I liked the ascending height of the stacked bales. It reminds me of a high-rise building. 3) I can relate to a scene like this because, as a teenager in Gardner, Kansas, I spent my summers bucking hay for some of the local farmers. It was hard work with long hours in summer heat & humidity. Work like this provides a sustained work ethic." -Jake Gaedtke

"I love visiting a horse barn over the last several years, seeing the horses in the morning mist, the cats patrolling the lofts, boots and saddles in the tack room. 'Quiet Morning' came to me when I was walking through the barn early on a sun-filled morning, and I saw a pair of well-worn boots lying around, and thought they could be the star of a painting with golden light. I painted this somewhat loosely, with quick strokes and abstractions on the wall and shelf as a way to feature the character of the boots." -Ann Watcher
