The Far West

Bonhams offers Western and California art at its Los Angeles showroom in November.

On November 11, Bonhams will offer more than 110 lots as part of the California & Western Artsale in Los Angeles. This sale, with its dual genres, frequently offers artwork that has crossover appeal with collectors of both Western and California materials.

Edgar Payne (1883-1947), Riders on the Mesa (Indian Riders), oil on canvas, 25¼ x 30 in. Estimate: $100/150,000

One of the top lots in the November sale is Edgar Payne’s Riders on the Mesa (Indian Riders), an oil painting estimated at $100,000 to $150,000. Aaron Bastian, director of fine art at Bonhams in San Francisco, notes that the work has two desirable elements: “An expansive landscape and the Native American riders,” he says.

G. Harvey (1933-2017), Across Powder Snow, 1988, oil on canvas, 36 x 30 in. Estimate: $50/70,000

“The Western section is anchored by two works each by the perennially popular G. Harvey and the very desirable Ed Mell,” adds Bastian. “We also have a number of Western bronzes by Harry Jackson and Joe Neil Beeler. We also have a lovely work by the Van Gogh of the Plains, Birger Sandzén, a still life of Chinese Wool Flowers and Zinnias.” The Harvey pieces are Across Powder Snow and Through Fields of Meadow, estimated at $50,000 to $70,000 each.

G. Harvey (1933-2017), Through Fields of Meadow, 1994, oil on canvas, 36 x 30 in. Estimate: $50/70,000

On the California side of the sale is Granville Redmond’s painting Poppies, estimated at $40,000 to $60,000. “Granville Redmond’s landscapes continue to be desirable in the California Impressionist market, and we will have multiples examples,” Bastian says. “We also have three very lovely works by John Marshall Gamble in the sale—two of which coming to us from the UK and are in untouched original condition.”

The auction house will also be offering work from Maynard Dixon, as well as Amédée Joullin’s 1897 oil The Passing of the Wampum Belt, estimated at $12,000 to $18,000. —
