"Three cowboys push a herd of Herefords across the high desert as the last light of day slips toward the horizon. With storm clouds gathering overhead, the riders race against fading light and changing weather—a fleeting moment of urgency, movement, and the untamed spirit of the West." - Rick Kennington

"In this piece, I wanted to not only capture a view of the Bitterroot Valley, but I also wanted to capture a feeling of the magnificence of the light hitting the water and the grasses. The sun is behind the clouds, but it's dispersing splendor onto the land. Every time I see light rays shining down from above, I am always in awe and can't help but to feel blessed for so much we have that is often taken for granted." - Lea Doise

"Trapper Peak is the tallest mountain in the Bitterroot range. This sunny autumn view is from Rye Creek Road south of Darby. I love how the sun dances on the fall trees and mountain snow." - Teresa Garland Warner
Winter Flight
Shirle Wempner
Oil on Panel
12 x 12 inches (L x W)
"I love to travel to Yellowstone Park and visit the Lamar Valley, where a majority of the bison roam freely throughout the valley floor. It's an incredible sight to see the river winding and flowing through the valley with hundreds of bison roaming over and across the vast area. In winter, it's especially pretty with new snow and with heavy snow. New snow is always so magical as it starts to float down and gently coat the countryside, like bright crystals floating in the air. In this piece, I enjoy the visual conversation between the magpie and the bison, as the magpie glides over the back of the bison on its way to another destination. A moment in time to see nature's balance and dance happening continually." - Shirle Wempner
Worth the Reach

"This black bear is from our beautiful Yellowstone Park. It was late August several years ago, and we happened to be driving by not long after he had climbed his hill, rewarding his efforts with a nice little patch of red berries. This is a complex negative space wildlife painting, and one of those pieces where my experience with drawing and painting came together to create the overall design around the bear. It came naturally, and without me realizing what was happening. When I stepped back to get a closer look, I could see a modern iteration of a line drawing had occurred in the negative space around the bear. At a closer look, it reminded me of the Native American bear symbols I have seen for much of my life, especially during visits to Montana throughout my childhood. That connection was not something I set out to create. It simply emerged through the process of drawing, editing, and painting the space around the bear." - Coila Evans
