Welcome to the November issue of Western Art Collector, featuring our annual Collector’s Focus: Western Small Works & Miniatures. There is something especially appealing about small works this time of year.These intimate works can make a powerful statement in a collection, while also offering collectors an opportunity to discover new artists, fill a special space or give an unforgettable work of art as a holiday gift.
Small works have always held an important place with collectors. They allow seasoned collectors to add work by an admired artist in a size that fits almost anywhere, while also giving newer collectors an approachable way to begin building a collection. A smaller painting can stand beautifully on its own, become part of an intimate grouping or add another layer of interest to a collection filled with larger works.
Original art makes an extraordinary gift. Unlike many gifts given during the holidays, original art can remind someone of a favorite place or a memorable experience. They capture something you love; long after the season has passed, that artwork remains. Many galleries featured in this issue are also celebrating with annual small-works exhibitions, including Manitou Galleries, Cassens Fine Art and the Plainsmen Gallery. We’ll have more in our December issue, so stay tuned to that one as well.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we also bring you several Black Friday shows, including Maxwell Alexander Gallery’s annual Black Friday online show. If you are looking to acquire a small work, this is one of the best times of year to explore, with an incredible variety of artists, styles and price points to choose from.
We also highlight special sections on nocturnes and, one of my favorites, the Spirit of the West, a theme beautifully represented by our cover artist, Naomi Brown. Whether you are adding to your own collection or finding the perfect piece for someone special, I hope this issue inspires you to look closely, collect thoughtfully and enjoy the season.
