On September 18, Jackson Hole Art Auction presented Mark Maggiori’s new solo show, which included 31 works that sold for $9.3 million. How do you follow that? For the Wyoming-based auction house, it followed up with another $9 million sale.
“With the momentum that we built coming out of the Mark Maggiori sale, we started with a large consignment of Maggiori studies and paintings. Anyone who was bridesmaid on Friday night during Mark’s show had an opportunity to be the bride on Saturday for the main sale. The thirst for contemporary Western was evident,” says Kevin Doyle, Jackson Hole Art Auction’s managing director. “We were also happy with so many new bidders. Our client base continues to grow, and we saw that all weekend long.”

G. Harvey (1933-2017), Rawhide and Roughnecks, 1986, oil on canvas, 35½ x 47½ in. Estimate: $300/500,000 SOLD: $480,000
The top lots of the sale both sold $480,000: G. Harvey’s Rawhide and Roughnecks (est. $300/500,000) and Maggiori’s The Trackers (est. $25/45,000), which sold 10 times over the high estimate. Harvey had a number of works in the top 10 lots, including Morning Glow on Powder Snow (est. $150/250,000) and Thinking of Spring (est. $125/225,000), that respectively sold for $240,000 and $204,000. “The G. Harvey’s did amazing. He has such a terrific market. Selling three major Harvey pieces last year got us many phone calls for consignors this year,” Doyle says. “Texas is the biggest buying pool for Harvey, but we saw bidders in Jackson Hole bidding and buying them.”
William Herbert “Buck” Dunton’s October Aspens sold high at $390,000, just barely missing its high estimate of $400,000. The work, which was the catalog cover, saw spirited bidding from the room, phones and internet before selling.

William R. Leigh (1866-1955), Looking for Bighorn, oil on canvas, 24¼ x 18 in. Estimate: $130/180,000 SOLD: $204,000
Logan Maxwell Hagege had a piece sell for six figures: The Call of the Canyon closed at $102,000. And wildlife master Bob Kuhn had numerous works sell after continuous bidding: Leopard for $180,000, Cacophony – Cougar & Hounds for $96,000, August Afternoon: Bison for $90,000 and On the Prod – Moose for $72,000.
One lot that caught many by surprise was Jonathan Noon’s oil My Way,showing a woman pointing a gun toward the edge of the painting. The lot was estimated at $12,000 to $18,000, but sold for $78,000, creating a new auction record for the rising Western artist. His previous record was set a year earlier, for $21,000.

Charles M. Russell (1864-1926), Buccaroos from the N–N Outfit on the Big Dry in Montana, 1902, watercolor on paper, 19¾ x 285/8 in. Estimate: $300/500,00 SOLD: $288,000
Interestingly, William R. Leigh’s Looking for Bighorn was back on the market after it sold for $139,000 at Christie’s blockbuster $84 million William Koch sale in January. The consignor bought it in January, but then, when they saw the March announcement of Maggiori’s show, they put the Leigh back on the market in anticipation of acquiring a Maggiori piece in September. The decision didn’t hurt them: Looking for Bighorn sold at Jackson Hole Art Auction for $204,000. Doyle referred to it as an amusing story of collectors chasing what they wanted for their collection “at all costs.”
Once all the dust had settled, the two sales—Maggiori and the full Jackson Hole Art Auction—sold $18.3 million with a 94 percent sell-through rate. The sales capped off a memorable and thrilling Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. —
