Coeur d’Alene Art Auction returns with the 6th edition of the popular fall online sale.

After reaching more than $17 million in sales during a July auction in Reno, Nevada, Coeur d’Alene Art Auction is returning to bidders with its popular Online Western and American Art Auction on November 7. This year’s auction, the sixth edition of the fall sale, will feature more than 180 lots of Western art.

“The success of our July sale made it clear that collectors are hungry for the best of the best in Western Art,” says Mike Overby, auction partner. “Our November catalog builds off that momentum, with a lineup that speaks to serious buyers and newcomers alike.”

Charles Wysocki (1928-2002), The Breadman, oil on canvas, 24 x 48 in. Estimate: $15/25,000

Overby points to sales, museum exhibitions and even solo shows all around the West, noting that the market is strong. “We’re excited for this sale,” he says. “And even more excited because this is one of our better online sales.”

One of the early favorites in the sale is Leon Gaspard’s Siberian Christmas, a 1935 oil that is estimated at $250,000 to $350,000. Gaspard, who was born in Russia and painted there throughout his life, is primarily linked, at least for Western collectors, to Taos, New Mexico, where he lived and worked alongside many of the greats from the Taos Society of Artists. Gaspard is widely collected in Western circles, including his Russian paintings like Siberian Christmas, which resembles winters in Northern New Mexico.

Leon Gaspard (1882-1964), Siberian Christmas, 1935, oil on canvas laid on board, 24 x 24 in. Estimate: $250/350,000

“It’s the cover of the catalog and it’s just a tremendous Gaspard painting, one of his best. We sold this back in 2016, and it sold for $300,000 back then. We expect to sell it at that price or higher this year,” Overby says. “He was known for these foreboding forest scenes, and this is a quintessential example.”

Another outstanding lot is Birger Sandzén’s Two Pines, an oil on canvas estimated at $30,000 to $50,000. “It has the best provenance a piece can have. It was painted in 1921 and a church group from Lindsborg, Kansas, purchased it from the artist to give to their pastor. They presented it to him as a gift and has been passed down through his family ever since,” Overby says. “It’s a great story, and really magnificent piece.”

Sydney Laurence (1865-1940), Cache at Sunset, oil on canvas, 20 x 15 in. Estimate: $15/25,000

Also available is the G. Harvey street scene Morning Flower Cart, estimated at $15,000 to $25,000, and Robert Abbett’s 1990 dog painting Stonewall Brittany, estimated at $15,000 to $25,000. The sale will have at least several Harvey paintings, as well as a bronze.

Another artist represented with several works is Syndey Laurence, the great Alaska painter who devoted much of his career to capturing Mt. McKinley. The sale will feature Cabin, Mt. McKinley (est. $15/25,000) and Cache at Sunset (est. $15/25,000). Cache at Sunset is especially unique, with a strong composition around the elevated cache structure built out of logs. The small, raised platform was meant to protect food and other items from bears and other creatures in the wilderness. “Of course, he’s known for Mt. McKinley, but this is a little different and quite nice,” Overby says.

Sydney Laurence (1865-1940), Cabin, Mt. McKinley, oil on canvas, 20 x 15 in. Estimate: $15/25,000

Coeur d’Alene Art Auction has done extremely well with works by John Nieto, and the sale will once again offer a piece from the modern figurative artist. Available to bidders is Fancy Dancer III from 2011. The work, with its bold design and fragmented panes of color, is estimated at $25,000 to $35,000.

Birger Sandzén (1871-1954), Two Pines, oil on canvas, 18 x 24 in. Estimate: $30/50,000

G. Harvey (1933-2017), Morning Flower Cart, oil on canvas, 12 x 9 in. Estimate: $15/25,000

Finally, the sale will offer a rare work from Charles Wysocki, whose folk-style paintings are modern twists on artists such as Grandma Moses. The work is The Breadman, estimated at $15,000 to $25,000. “He’s definitely a more contemporary Grandma Moses and was influenced by her. We don’t see many of these paintings come out, so people tend to pay attention when they do. The consignors purchased it from Hirschl & Adler in the 1970s and it’s never been on the market since then,” Overby says. “Not all of his works have words on them like this one, which makes this one special. Those are his words in that poem. It’s a little additional bonus that comes in the painting. It will be interesting to see how bidders respond to this because it’s quite nice.”

John Nieto (1936-2018), Fancy Dancer III, 2011, acrylic on canvas, 40 x 30 in. Estimate: $25/35,000

Other works in the sale include pieces by Charles M. Russell, Gerard Curtis Delano, William de la Montagne Cary, Frank Stick, Frank Hoffman, John Fery, Josh Elliott, Doug Hyde, Jill Carver, Susan Kliewer, Dan Mieduch and many others.

Although the sale is online, the auction house does offer previews by appointment at its office in Hayden, Idaho. —
