Historic and contemporary works performed well at the C.M. Russell’s annual sale in Montana.

With a packed house and lively bidding, The Russell once again offered Western art of all varieties to bidders on March 20 and 21 in Great Falls, Montana. The annual event featured hundreds of works of art, including many from top contemporary artists who attended the sale. 

Charles M. Russell (1864-1926), The Rattlesnake, oil, 12¼ x 18½ in. Estimate: $800/900,000 SOLD: $1.5 million

Highlights from the two-night auction included four Russell works: The Rattlesnake (est. $800/900,000) that sold for $1.5 million, The Run (est. $800/900,000) for $875,000, The Bolter (est. $450/650,000) for $819,000 and Finger That Kills… (est. $125/150,000) that closed at $210,000.

 Luke Frazier, The Beginning of the End, oil, 40 x 60 in. Estimate: $40/60,000 SOLD: $72,800

Among the living artists, highlights included pieces by Jennifer Johnson, Amanda Markel, Amber Blazina, Chad Poppleton, Lisa Gleim, W. Steve Seltzer and many others. The best of show was Luke Frazier’s oil The Beginning of the End, which sold for $72,000, leaping well over its $60,000 high estimate. The painting featured a single buffalo gazing out across the plains. —
