Capall Tréan (Strong Horse)

This is the third in my first charcoal on panel series. He was an impressive sight, lumbering up over the hill on a hot summer day. His tail whipped in the heat and his hide glistened in the sun. It was a great experience drawing every detailed muscle of this very strong, healthy horse.

This is one of three horse drawings I first completed using powdered charcoal on panels. I not only fell in love with the medium, but drawing horses using it. I took the references for each piece while visiting with a local herd of horses near Martinsdale. I love how social they are and the ways they interact with each other. In this piece, one stood watching me while the other relaxed without a care.

This is the gelding of Heath and Erin LaFrambois. I caught him tucking in and tossing his mane during a recent branding. I loved the pose along with his distinct cheek brand and matching tack. It's little moments like these I love to capture and draw.

I took the reference for this drawing in the Pryor Mountains of Montana. I had the pleasure of following a wild stallion and mare as they slowly made their way down the mountain. This moment stood out to me. I loved the sideways glance and swish of his tail while the lone tree in the background stood like a sentinel. It was a joy to draw.

I stopped along the side of the road so I could capture some references of the new babies near my home. This little foal looked like she was chiseled from marble. Her palomino momma stood close with a mouth full of spring greens and flowers. It was a beautiful moment and a pleasure to draw.
