The Jackson Hole Art Auction has long been known as a place to buy art featuring cowboys, wildlife and America’s most iconic landscapes. A new sale this spring will include those categories and also expand into new ones.
Robert William Wood (1889-1979), Teton Autumn, oil on canvas, 24 x 59 in. Estimate: $10/20,000On May 13 through 15, the Jackson Hole Art Auction will host a series of timed and live sales as part of its spring offerings that will include more than 500 lots. One of the sales, Native Arts: Historic and Contemporary, will take place on May 13 and will feature around 100 weavings, pieces of beadwork, pottery, jewelry and more. All of the sales will take place online and a preview will be available in the auction house’s gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Conrad Schwiering (1916-1986), Spring in the Rockies (Longs Peak), oil on board, 20 x 30 in. Estimate: $7/10,000
For managing director Kevin Doyle, the addition of new categories and sales represents an exciting time for the auction house. “It is always significant when we branch out into categories outside traditional fine art. Having Terry Winchell as an owner of JHAA certainly spurred this on as he has been dealing in this category for over 45 years with his business, Fighting Bear Antiques,” Doyle says. “I think there is a demand for [this material]. We had great success with the Rockefeller Collection in September, which attracted so many new bidders to our auction, so it made sense to have a dedicated Native Arts: Historic and Contemporary auction. This auction will feature more pieces from the Rockefeller Collection as well as Tony Turner’s estate, of which the fine art was auctioned in September. Jackson is hosting its sixth annual Teton Powwow this May so there is awareness and appreciation locally, and the category has been long sought-after at auction, Indian markets and with dealers.”

Pomo Shield with Shells and Quail Plumes, ca. 1890-1910, 19½ x 17¼ x 1½ in. Estimate: $12/18,000
Native American items include a Pomo shield with shells and quail plumes (est. $12/18,000) from around 1890 to 1910, and a Navajo third-phase blanket (est. $10/15,000) woven around 1870.
In addition to these Indigenous materials, the sale will also offer classic Western works from artists such as Robert Wood, G. Russell Case, John DeMott, Conrad Schwiering, Ben Steele, Fremont Ellis, John Bye and many others.

Ben Steele, Cowboy No. 5, 2021, oil on canvas, 36 x 27 in. Estimate: $4/6,000
The sales begin on May 13, at 10 a.m., with Native Arts: Historic and Contemporary. A timed auction that opens on April 17 will begin closing at May 13 at 1 p.m. Finally, a live online sale will take place on May 15 at 10 a.m. Bidders are encouraged to check the website starting April 17 for auction details and to see the online catalog.
