Everyday Moments

Bryce Pettit and Matthew Sievers bring bronze and oils works to Blue Rain Gallery.

Sculpture and paintings are often categorized separately because they are, after all, two different forms of art. And yet, they share enough similarities that the chasm between them is deep but also narrow, and requires little more than a hop to cross over.

Matthew Sievers, Water Drop, oil on panel, 36 x 48 in.

This is abundantly clear at shows that involve both paintings and bronzes. The newest one will feature sculptor Bryce Pettit and painter Matthew Sievers. It opens on May 29 at Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

“Matthew Sievers captures the beauty of everyday moments through expressive color, bold texture and a sense of movement that feels alive on the canvas,” says gallery representative Leah Garcia. “Bryce Pettit approaches the natural world with the same reverence, translating his deep knowledge of wildlife and ecology into beautifully crafted bronze sculptures. Together, their work creates a thoughtful dialogue between the energy of life and the enduring presence of the natural world.”

Bryce Pettit, Bunny Ball, bronze with patinas, 3¾ x 8 in.

Pettit’s work in the show will include the playful Bunny Ball, showing a grouping of bunnies nestled together in an overload of cuteness. For collectors who swerve away from cute, Pettit has them covered with Keystone, showing a bat swooping down over cactus flowers. The sculptor routinely finds new subjects and fresh perspectives that are rare within Western bronze.

Matthew Sievers, Cloud Shadows, oil on panel, 56 x 56 in.

For Sievers’ paintings, the artist explores varied subjects, lighting and times of day.

“In this body of work, I’m focusing on contrast in values, hues and especially texture. Texture has become one of my favorite design elements. Using various tools creates opportunity for the work to reflect light differently, whether from a smooth squeegee mark, or the grooves made from the bristles of a brush,” he says. “For this show, I am using a variety of textures that are unexpected [and] created with found objects to manipulate the paint. I want these marks to stir emotion and memory in the viewer. A unique moment that they have experienced.”

Bryce Pettit, Keystone, bronze with patinas, 13½ x 10 x 7 in.

The two-artist show will remain on view in Santa Fe through June 11. —
