Welcome to the March issue of Western Art Collector! This month is one of our largest issues every year. There is so much happening all over the country that it feels like our Super Bowl. I want to spotlight some Western milestones this month. Let’s start with our cover art, William Haskell’s The Long Ride to Redemption, the first painting by the artist to grace our cover. You will see his work at the Night of Artists in March at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. This year is Night of Artists’ 25th anniversary. What started as just an idea is now one of the most important shows for Western artists. Our team will be at the event to particpate in the celebration! The opening weekend is March 27 and 28. If you want to be included, reserve your tickets now.
If you are partial to Big Sky Country over the Lone Star State, then head to the Out West Art Show & Sale in Great Falls, Montana. The show runs during Western Art Week, which is made up of more than a dozen art shows, including The Russell, hosted by the C.M. Russell Museum, and March in Montana. All of the shows will take place around March 19, which is Charlie Russell’s birthday. If you’re looking for sunny weather, head to Arizona where the great Thomas Blackshear II is having a show at Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson. And leave time for Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West, which also takes place in Arizona, in the lovely city of Wickenburg. The shows and gallery previews this month provide a lot of opportunities to add to your art collection.
As we look ahead, it is clear that Western art is no longer defined by just looking backward. Executive editor Michael Clawson provides a great perspective on this after he attended Christie’s record-breaking $84 million sale of the William I. Koch Collection. We celebrate this milestone, and all the ones that came before it, and all yet to come. Western art is continuously being elevated by artists, galleries, institutions, auction houses, shows and collectors. The story of the American West is still being written, and the art has never been more important.
