Glenn Dean cover turns up in NYC
In March 2014, Glenn Dean’s painting Descending Cowboy appeared on the cover of Western Art Collector. The next month the painting was in the Scottsdale Art Auction, where it doubled its high estimate. Twelve years later, the piece turned back up on January 24 during Sotheby’s American West sale in New York City. In a brief exchange with the artist, Dean noted that not only was that his first magazine cover, but it was also one of his earliest Western paintings with a cowboy as the main subject. Descending Cowboy sold at Sotheby’s for $31,750, nearly quadrupling the high estimate of $8,000. The whole sale was full of gems, including works from Albert Bierstadt, N.C. Wyeth, Frederic Remington, Cyrus Dallin and many others. Living artists with works in the sale were Z.S. Liang, Martin Grelle, Logan Maxwell Hagege and John Moyers.

William Haskell sells out at Medicine Man
New Mexico modernist William Haskell is on hot streak with his newest solo show at Medicine Man Gallery. The show sold out by the end of the opening night. The painter’s work is striking a chord with collectors, who are frequently drawn to his fragmented land and sky forms, which seem to shatter within the light of the Southwest. Some of Haskell’s newest pieces feature fresh subjects for the artist: human figures, desert critters, nocturnes and plants that create jagged forms against his skylines. Haskell will next have work at this month’s Night of Artists in San Antonio, Texas. —
