Viva Las Vegas

Morphy Auctions brings more than 600 lots and 75 vendors to its annual Old West show in Las Vegas.

Although it’s known for its exotic varieties of entertainment—gambling, shows, food and spectacle—Las Vegas is still very much a Western town. You just have to know where to look. Western art will return to Las Vegas on January 23 and 24 when Morphy Auctions presents the annual Old West & Native American Art Show & Auction.

Cañon City Prison “Red Ryder” spurs, 2 ¾ in. band, 2 ½ in. shank and 2 in. rowel. Estimate: $10/15,000

The show, long championed by respected art dealer Brian Lebel before he sold it to Morphy, is presenting its third edition of the show in Las Vegas, where it will share floor space with the Las Vegas Antiques Arms Show.

“Not only will we have all the great Old West material, but the show will include the firearms show, as well as a firearms engraver and a show dedicated to samurai swords,” says Cheryl Goyda, show manager. “We expect anywhere from 75 to 100 vendors, and then around 600 lots in the sale. We are changing the floor plan a little, so all the shows are together, and then across the hall is the auction.”

Fernand Lungren (1857-1932), In the Mountains, oil on canvas, 24 x 36 in. Estimate: $8/12,000

Goyda notes that the show features every aspect of the Old West, and even some more contemporary art, but also features a large grouping of Native American materials. “Our vendors always have some of the best materials, and that is certainly the case this year,” she says. “In the auction, we have a great collection of pueblo pottery from a Pennsylvania consigner who bought from the best artisans. We also have tremendous textiles, beadwork and lots of silver and turquoise jewelry.”

Astley David Montague Cooper (1856-1924), Buffalo Inquest, oil on canvas, 30 x 50 in. Estimate: $8/12,000

Helping this year’s show as a consultant and expert in Native American art is Kim Martindale, whose Whitehawk show in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one of the important late-summer shows in the Southwest.

Lots in the auction include an Edward H. Bohlin parade saddle and bridle (est. $20/30,000), a rare pair of Cañon City Prison “Red Ryder” spurs (est. 10/15,000), a pair of Jeremiah Watt spurs (est. $8/12,000) and a Texas longhorn chair made by Wenzel Friedrich around 1889 (est. $5/7,000).

Paintings include pieces by Astley David Montague Cooper and Fernand Lungren.

Edward H. Bohlin (1895-1980), Charles Starrett parade saddle and bridle, 13 x 27 x 36 in. Estimate: $20/30,000

Another aspect of the show is the location itself, which is within the Westgate, once home to Elvis Presley. Visitors will be able to stay at the hotel and have access to numerous restaurants, the casino floor, entertainment and nightlife, and also Las Vegas Boulevard. —
