For Valerie B. Gobeil, painting wildlife is driven by a profound connection to the animal world and a passion for storytelling. Real life encounters and extensive world travels fuel her inspiration, cultivating a deeper understanding of nature’s stories.

Wings of America, oil, 30 x 30 in. Available at Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale.
Gobeil’s connection to wildlife began with her rural Canadian upbringing near a bison sanctuary and solidified through experiences like studying orangutan behavior in Borneo and observing wild stallions in Arizona. Her creative process goes “beyond the visible.” Blending technical realism with creative composition and play of light, she attempts to capture a fleeting, authentic moment in an animal’s journey.
Wings of America exemplifies this approach by capturing a bald eagle in the dynamic act of fishing. Going beyond a simple rendering, she uses light, shadow and brushwork to convey the power, focus and raw intensity of the eagle’s life—a narrative of survival and freedom.

Got Honey?, oil, 16 x 16 in.
Similarly, in the charming painting Got Honey?, the artist captures a lighthearted, intimate “moment in life.” The painting showcases her ability to evoke a smile and a sense of wonder in the viewer, illustrating the simple, everyday joys found in nature.
Her work will next appear at the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale in Denver on January 8, and also Settlers West Gallery’s American Miniatures show on February 14 in Tucson, Arizona.
