AKC Museum of the Dog: Veryl Goodnight

The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog recently announced the acquisition of Veryl Goodnight’s sled dog painting Perseverance. The piece will be part of the museum’s permanent collection, which also includes major examples by Sir Edwin Landseer, Percival Rosseau, Maud Earl, Arthur Wardle and many others. The museum is located in the headquarters of the American Kennel Club in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City.

Perseverance, oil on linen, 24 x 30 in.

The Goodnight painting is part of a series of 10 paintings devoted to sled dogs that recently was on exhibit at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West in Arizona. “The collection came to the attention of Barbara Schwartz, retired AKC vice president of show operations and neighbor of artist Veryl Goodnight,” AKC noted in an announcement about the acquisition. “She introduced the work to Alan Fausel, director and curator of the Museum of the Dog. He immediately focused on the action portrayed in Perseverance and presented it to leaders in the Siberian Husky Club of America. Private donations funded the purchase.”

During her research for her series of paintings, Goodnight assembled her own team of sled dogs, which helped her create authentic imagery for her paintings. “My mission with the sled dog collection was to share the untold history of these canine heroes. Having a major museum add one of the paintings to their collection helps fulfill that goal,” Goodnight says. “The Museum of the Dog has canine-themed art from all over the world by artists that have helped shape my own vision, such as Sir Edwin Landseer. I am beyond honored.”
