Roundup Returns

A showcase of 150 paintings and sculptures highlights the legacy and future of Western art in Kerrville, Texas

In late April, Western artists and collectors alike will converge upon Kerrville, Texas, for the Museum of Western Art’s 42nd Annual Roundup Exhibition & Sale. With more than 150 paintings and sculptures available from 61 artists, the event is an opportunity for visitors to interact with artists and discover something new.

Herman Walker, Almost There, oil, 24 x 18 in.

“The thing I look forward to the most every year is the opportunity to get reacquainted with the artists and collectors who attend Roundup,” says Darrell Beauchamp, executive director of the museum. “For 42 years, we’ve been presenting quality art to great collectors, and it’s a joy to put the artists and collectors together.”

Painter Herman Walker is a long-time participant in the Roundup, and says he looks forward to seeing the efforts of his fellow artists every year, as well as the opportunity to connect with collectors. “The magical tension of opening night when artists, friends, and thoughtful collectors come together for a brief but exciting few hours is what makes Roundupgolden,” says Walker.

Carol Arnold, Santa Elena, pastel on archival paper, 24 x 18 in.

His painting Almost There features a trio of riders escorting their cattle down a dirt path, approaching a windmill. “For the semi-arid land of West Texas, the windmill is the center point of life for both domestic animals as well as wildlife,” he explains. “Trails and roads come to this point where life-giving water is provided.” The windmill serves as a beacon that the riders and their animals are close to relief.

“What I look forward to most at Roundup is getting to spend a couple of days with a variety of artists that have mastered their craft,” says painter Carol Arnold. “Creating art is so solitary that to be able to gather together is very special.”

This year, Arnold will show her painting Santa Elena, which depicts the Rio Grande River flowing through the canyon that divides Texas and Mexico. “Santa Elena Canyon is a place of raw beauty and wonder,” she says.

Peter Eades is participating in the Roundupfor the first time this year. “I had an opportunity to see the show last year and was very impressed with the quality of the work and the presentation,” he says. “This will be my first time showing my work in Texas. I’m really looking forward to meeting a new group of artists and collectors and being a part of this year’s show.”

Peter Eades, Winter Thunder, oil, 16 x 20 in.

Eades’ Winter Thunder captures the majestic of the American Bison, and was inspired by a winter trip to Yellowstone. “Seeing the big bulls covered in frost and plowing through deep snow gave me a new appreciation for these true survivors,” he says.

At this year’s Roundup, the museum will hold its first-ever inductee ceremony at its Cowboy Artists Honor Garden. C. Michael Dudash, Todd Connor and Albin Veselka will have their handprints, boot prints and signatures stamped in concrete, which will then be permanently displayed alongside prints from more than 60 emeritus and active Cowboy Artists already represented in the garden.

The Roundup Exhibition & Sale opening weekend festivities will take place from April 25 and 26, and the artworks will remain on view at the museum through June 7. —
