New Mexico-based artist Teresa Lynn Johnson centers her work around Western landscapes and animals, both wild and domestic.
Johnson was born in Coleman, Texas, and spent her childhood living on a secluded 400-acre farm, working with animals and exploring nature on a daily basis. In this refuge for wildlife, she developed a love for nature and animals.

I Spy, oil, 20 x 40 in.
“Nature or any light-filled subject fills me with inspiration and captures my imagination for a visual story,” Johnson says. “My choice of medium to create a visual story is oil paint, as I love its rich color and the ability to develop texture.”

She continues, “When an idea begins to form and I explore it, this usually includes using a sketchpad, a camera and/or plein air studies to create references for further development. Next, I create a tonal under painting and continue by painting with my chosen color palette. I block in the large abstract areas with my bigger brushes and palette knives, before I start bringing in detail with smaller brushes, closely determining if the brushstrokes I have made are expressing the story I want to show.”

When not painting, Johnson enjoys taking adventure trips into nature, searching for reference material at wildlife refuges, camping and hiking in the mountains, or driving back roads in rural areas. “My desire is to capture, preserve and share this beautiful world that surrounds me.” —
