Painter Brad Overton has been busy in his studio preparing for the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale in January 2025. One of the works to emerge from his painting sessions is Mountain Music, a work that has taken a couple years to complete.
“It’s a shrine to music and color and life,” the artist says. “My work has leaned heavily toward still life since I began making art as a kid. I was then making shrines also. Collections of rocks, seashells, figurines, juxtaposed with photographs or postcards in the background. I’d set these things up on bookshelves in my room to honor the spirit of the things I loved in life. I never stopped doing it. Now I do it every day and have for over 20 years as an artist.”

Mountain Music, oil on canvas, 48 x 36 in.
Overton continues: “The gift of art is that it can be with you anywhere you can arrange or notice light, and objects in light. Artists and collectors know the feelings of reverent, wild joy that comes from being with something elevated to the status of art just by being seen. When we commune with art this way, we are elevated, too. For awhile, and whenever we choose to be, we can feel that transcendent aspect in art and life by looking at the world in a certain way. I try to find that space in my work and hold it still long enough to share.”
The Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale kicks off on January 6 in Denver. —
