Wildlife & More

Hindman offers Western works from the Laumeister Collection in a Denver sale.

More than 500 lots of Western and wildlife art will be available to bidders on August 29 and 30 when Hindman offers selections from the Laumeister Collection from the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, Vermont.

The sale will take place in Denver and feature work from many prominent Western artists, including Charles Pabst, John Fawcett, Francois Koch, Bob Kuhn and many others.

John Fawcett, Stranger’s Camp, oil on canvas, 22 x 40” Estimate: $3/5,000

“We are incredibly proud to present the Laumeister Collection for auction in August,” says Alexandria Dreas, Hindman art specialist. “Mr. Laumeister championed artists from across the Western and wildlife categories and amassed an incredible collection that truly showcases the beauty and wonder of the natural world. This is a comprehensive, inclusive group of property that features some of the most important names in Wildlife and Western art.”

Bob Kuhn (1920-2007), Winter Chase, bronze, ed. 12 of 20, 12 x 24 x 6” Estimate: $10/15,000

Much of the collection has been sitting unseen in the Bennington Center in Vermont. The center was conceived by the late art collector Bruce Laumeister, who wanted the center to serve as an arts hub in Southern Vermont. The facility included a 315-seat theater, seven art galleries and even apartments for artist residencies. Laumeister sold the center to the Southern Vermont College, which went bankrupt in 2019. The artwork, still owned by Laumeister, was in the unused center until it was consigned to Hindman for the August sale.

Charles Pabst, Moran Point – Grand Canyon, oil on canvas, 60 x 96” Estimate: $10/15,000

Dan Smith, Riverbank Refreshment, 2005, acrylic, 15 x 32” Estimate: $5/7,000

“It’s almost entirely Western and wildlife art. He had a real passion for artwork that exemplified the beauty of the natural world and the people who interacted with the natural world,” says Dreas. “He also had a great eye for historical themes of the American West, including cowboy and Indian scenes. He was a huge supporter of the Society of Animal Artists and many wildlife artists. He was also a huge fan of Charles Pabst, who is represented well in the sale.”

Francois Koch, All Ears, oil on canvas, 30 x 36” Estimate: $4/6,000

Dreas adds that Laumeister was the kind of collector who was interested in exploring work by up-and-coming artists or artists who did not have household names within Western art. “These were artists who were still getting their bearings within the art world,” she adds.

The sale will take place on August 29 and 30. There will be live bidding in the Denver showroom, as well as online bidding through several platforms. —
