May is a big month for Western art and for the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona. The museum’s first event of the month is the 20th iteration of its popular Miniature Masterpiece Show & Sale, a fixed-price, by-draw sale that begins May 1, with the drawing taking place on May 29.
More than 70 small-scale works will be on display and available for purchase by artists such as Phil Beck, Don Weller, Ken Rowe, Susan Kliewer, Joni Falk and Nancy Cawdrey.

The 70 invited artists submitted work that measures no more than 15 square inches for two-dimensional pieces and 16 inches in length or height for sculptures. “Small works shows are a great way for seasoned collectors to get introduced to new artists and for new collectors to begin building their collection,” says Jeanette Holverson, curator and collections manager at the Phippen.
A reception for the exhibition takes place on Friday, May 5, at 5:30 p.m., offering a festive opportunity to meet the artists and browse the art.

“I enjoy displaying small artwork,” says Holverson. “I wonder at all the artworks that have so much detail packed into a confined space. With every miniature masterpiece show, there is an element of whimsy—even in serious depictions…”
The draw takes place May 29 at 11 a.m. at the museum. Beginning May 2, potential buyers can complete an intent-to-purchase form for each piece they wish to purchase. Winning bidders have 15 minutes to purchase the work. Absentee buyers whose slips are drawn must purchase the artwork.

That same weekend, the Phippen hosts the 49th annual Western Art Show & Sale at the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza in historic downtown Prescott. This Memorial Day weekend tradition features more than 80 Western artists from across the nation, two quick-draw challenges with live auctions, an award ceremony, and an artist meet-and-greet dinner.
