Artist Focus: Tim Gump

Tim Gump is a self-taught West Virginia artist who enjoys living among the Appalachian Mountains.

Cherokee in the Shenandoah Mountain Range, oil on canvas, 24 x 36”

“Inspiration comes easy in a state that offers so much natural beauty along with the history,” he says. “Most of my time has been spent connecting me to a life in the past and what I enjoy painting the most—the Native Americans, especially the Eastern Woodland Indians that once lived here and gazed upon its beauty long ago. This is where my passion for painting lies. Their way of life is fascinating. The soil in this state is rich with footprints of their past. Each time I start prepping for a new painting it’s as if I fall into that time period. It’s this journey I take at the easel that opens up creativity. In all my pieces I want to share this with the viewers so they can also take the same journey and allow their eye’s imagination to lead them beyond the surface of the canvas.”

A Changing World, oil on canvas, 20 x 16”

Among Gump’s work are paintings that show the beauty of the land and how the Native Americans of the region interacted and used the land, and also magnificent portraits of his subjects that show their clothing, accouterments and detail in their faces and emotions.

An Offering of Refreshments, oil on canvas, 24 x 20”

“My focus on the eastern Indians is to help the viewers to engage in such amazing people that should never be forgotten. With canvas, paint and a brush, I can create a moment in time from the past that is most enjoyable to see and imagine living once again,” the artist says. “I have always believed that the artist’s brush can transcend the limits of ordinary vision and become an expression of creative imagination. To me, when this happens, this is the greatest art.” —
