Historic night for Mark Maggiori
On March 11, Legacy Gallery presented a new solo show for painter Mark Maggiori titled Beyond the Golden Skies. Buzz for the show had reached a fever pitch in the days leading up to the sale, which did not disappoint with a number of historic milestones when it finally opened.
In the Middle Runs a River, oil on canvas, 36 x 32” Estimate: $50/70,000 SOLD: $500,000 Not only did Maggiori sell out all 28 works, often with dozens or hundreds of bids in the boxes, but he also managed to break or tie seven personal world auction records—one after another across nine lots. His auction record was $99,000 going into the event, and then quickly hit $180,000, $195,000, $200,000, $300,000, $380,000 and finally $500,000 with the piece In the Middle Runs a River. Living Western artists who have achieved $500,000 or more at auction are on a very short list: Martin Grelle, Howard Terpning and now Maggiori.

Although no accurate figures were kept, the show also likely broke attendance records for a solo Western show with hundreds of fans and collectors in Legacy Gallery, and a line down the street to get in.
One final record was the sales total: $3,079,000. —
