A Family Affair

Three members of the Moore family will show new work at Broadmoor Galleries in Colorado.

When it comes to artistic talent, Anna and Robbie Moore didn’t fall far from the tree. Together with their father, Robert Moore, they will show more than 40 pieces together at Broadmoor Galleries in an exhibition titled A Family Affair.

“Following in the family trade, Anna and Robbie are discovering their voices while employing the concepts and techniques learned from their father,” says Jamie Oberloh, gallery co-director. “Each artist has a distinct style working with impasto and color harmony.”

Robert Moore, Let the Light Shine, oil, 40 x 60”

As a full-time painter for the last 35 years, Robert has been eager to share his love of art and nature with his children. “From their childhood, Anna and Robbie spent time in a backpack going with me to paint in the mountains or down by the river,” he says.

In Robert’s painting Let the Light Shine, winter sunlight reflects off the snow to illuminate the trunks of aspen trees. “The wintery masses where the foliage would be is a great place to experiment with color progressions and neutral harmonies,” he says.

Anna Moore, A Day Like This, oil, 36 x 48”

After a childhood filled with art and nature, Anna attended Utah State University and received her BFA. She now lives in Missoula, Montana, where she photographed the references for her painting A Day Like This. It was a sunny, late-summer day that filled her with a “squeal-worthy joy,” she says.

“I worked three years at an outdoor camp, and I think many people can relate to the feeling of full immersion in a summer day, when time loses its grip,” she says. “I hope A Day Like This evokes similar feelings and memories in viewers.”

Robbie is the fifth of the six Moore children, and says he was always doing something to get his family’s attention. “I now pair that same chaotic energy with the principles of art and design to capture the attention of my viewer,” he says.

Robbie Moore, From the Shadows, oil, 24 x 30”

In his painting From the Shadows, a snowy mountain casts its shadow over a lake. On the shoreline, light emanates from the window of a small cabin. “I wanted From the Shadows to bring a sense of contentment to the viewer,” he says. “It is the moment you look up at a sunlit mountain and see it as a snapshot of the day that has just passed. A beautiful sunny day that was well lived.”

To get ready for a family show like this one, the Moores send texts back and forth filled with shots of their works in progress and exchange encouragement and critiques.

Robert Moore, Your Welcome, 60 x 40”

“To show art with my family is to combine the love of seeing them with the satisfaction of presenting finished paintings and knowing they are experiencing that, too,” Anna says.

“Preparing for a family show is such a thrill,” Robbie says. “Once the show finally comes around, each of us celebrate because we have all contributed to every piece.”

A Family Affair opens on May 18 with a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. and will remain on view through June 8. —
