What event (gallery show, museum exhibit, etc.) in the next few months are you looking forward to, and why?
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the opening of the Vladem Contemporary, our new site which will open in Santa Fe’s Railyard District this summer. However, I’m also looking forward to SITE Santa Fe’s upcoming exhibition Bruce Nauman: His Mark, which is his first solo exhibition in New Mexico, though he has been a resident since 1979.

What are you reading?
I’m always reading three or four things at once, but I just started Ron Cooper’s book Finding Mezcal. Cooper is not only an interesting contemporary artist but also an important purveyor of mezcal.
Interesting exhibit, gallery opening or work of art you’ve seen recently.
I just had the opportunity to see the Denver Art Museum’s exhibition Near East to Far West: Fictions of French and American Colonialism. The influence of orientalism on both European artists and American artists working in the Southwest is not necessarily a new topic, but this exhibit approaches the topic with fresh eyes and includes a lot of fantastic objects.
What are you researching at the moment?
I’m working with our curatorial team on the 2024 exhibition Off-Center: New Mexico Art, 1970-2000, which will explore a pivotal moment in New Mexican art. That time period saw tremendous changes in the kind of art being produced in New Mexico, especially with the influx of a new, younger generation.

What is your dream exhibit to curate? Or see someone else curate?
We’re actually working on one of my dream projects, which is a survey of surrealism in the Southwest. The exhibition will explore the history and continuing influence of surrealism in the American Southwest and Mexico. —
