Steve Kestrel

Steve Kestrel is a rare breed of artist. His empathy and passion for the natural world are well documented over the decades through his creations. What truly sets Kestrel apart is his choice to work in some of the toughest mediums known, such as granite and riverstone. He gathers and hauls unique stones out of very tough terrain on his nature and wildlife preserve and then finds a place to house them, each awaiting their stories yet to be revealed. Some stones may lay in waiting for many years before the deeper story of the earth and its creatures is exposed.

Sole of the Rock, California riverstone, 6½ x 28 x  20"

Old Souls (sperm whales), gabbro riverstone with granite fieldstone base, 38½ x 10½ x 12"

The subjects are as diverse as they come, whether two whales intertwined in his vertical stone Old Souls, or a delicate dance of dragonflies revealed on a granite river stone accented with gold leaf titled Pondhawks At Waterline. Many of the stones are also cast in bronze giving a broader collector base the chance to acquire. Pika Pika depicts two little critters who live high above timberline scurrying with their stash of grasses and weeds to stockpile nourishment for the long Rocky Mountains winter ahead. The sculpture Sole of the Rock demonstrates that Kestrel is a conscientious observer and protector of nature and its environs and the creatures that inhabit it.

Kestrel is part of an artist trio exhibition at Claggett/Rey Gallery called Nature’s Preservation. The exhibition is in conjunction with and benefits the Eagle Valley Land Trust of which Steve is a perfect fit. The exhibition will be on view September 1 to 26.
