Jie Wei Zhou is the featured artist at this year’s Fall Group Show at InSight Gallery in Texas

InSight Gallery’s annual Fall Group Show for 2021 will highlight the work of Chinese artist Jie Wei Zhou. More than 75 works will be shown at the Fredericksburg, Texas, gallery September 3 through 24.

Jie Wei Zhou, The Storm is Coming, oil, 30 x 24”

Jie Wei Zhou studied both Russian and French painting styles in Shanghai, absorbing and integrating them into his own painterly style. Yet, he says, “I don’t want people to see my brush strokes. I want them to see the heart.” Now living and working in Colorado, he explains, “In my paintings I prefer to depict senior people and children. In my opinion, these people represent the two sides of our lives. An old person looks like a thick book filled with many untold, exciting stories, while a child is filled with curiosity and wants to learn the mysterious world.”

John Coleman, Of Heaven and Earth, charcoal on paper, 37½ x 26½”

His painting, Reminiscing, depicts a dignified old man lost in thought, his tightly rendered face coming into focus from the background of broad brushstrokes suggesting the complexity of memory.

Dan Bodelson, Birds in the Bush, oil, 30 x 40”

Greg Overton was fascinated by the paintings of Frederic Remington and Charlie Russell when he was a boy. He says, “Nothing compares to the freedom that was once experienced in the West, but people still crave it. I want to share that spirit…share it with others so they can feel freedom and strength.” He has chosen to express his feeling for the old West in portraits of historical figures among Native American tribes. He does extensive research, often among the tribes themselves, chooses appropriate models and scrupulously accurate renditions of body paint and regalia. His Conquering Eagle depicts a Crow with an eagle headdress, shell jewelry and war paint.

The Rose Window at San José Mission in San Antonio was carved in about 1770 and is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial design. It captured the eye of Calvin Lang who had studied at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and moved to the United States in 1987. Lang’s painting of the window captures the glaring hot sun picking out the details of the intricately carved window.

Dan Bodelson is known for his visual stories of Native American subjects and his paintings of the burros of Santa Fe’s historic past. In Birds in the Bush, however, he chose smaller-scale subjects and a monochromatic palette—birds fluffing their feathers to stay warm on snow covered branches. He grew up in Colorado and New Mexico and now resides in Santa Fe.
