There’s nothing quite like the energy of a quick draw event. Instead of working in the comfort of their home studios or in the solitude of nature, painters and sculptors are challenged to work with a time limit and live audience. At the Jackson Hole Quick Draw event on September 18, Lyn St. Clair, Troy Collins and Bryce Pettit will return to represent Mountain Trails Gallery, while Colt Idol joins for the first time.
Troy Collins, A Life Unfolds, oil on canvas, 36 x 78"
On making his Quick Draw debut, Montana-based Idol says, “I’ve watched this event in person for many years and to be a participant this year is an extreme honor.”
Idol often paints scenes inspired by his home state. The setting for his dramatic oil on canvas Lost in Time is based on the North Fork of the Flathead River. “It is intended to have as much drama as I can convey,” he says. “Whenever I see fall cottonwoods I’m always struck by their size. In this painting I wanted the subjects far away enough to highlight the grandness of the scene. In this painting, as in most of my work, I’m trying to ride the line of believability.”
Lyn St. Clair, Contemplation, oil on canvas, 48 x 30"
Drawing from her personal experiences in the field, wildlife is St. Clair’s go-to subject matter. The wolves, bears and cougars she can see from her backyard near the National Forest and wilderness north of Yellowstone are recent sources of fascination. In the striking portrait Contemplation, a white wolf stares down the viewer with eerie golden eyes. Her Snake Charmers features a group of bears in a river, bobbing their heads above water.
Bryce Pettit, Kings of the Firestone Plateau, bronze
Collins’ paintings are easily recognizable from his signature images of aspen trees bathed in brilliant colors, as exemplified by Where You Once Were. His impressionist style creates a vivid, memorable experience for viewers as the light dances through the trees, amplifying their natural beauty.

Pettit will bring a sculptor’s point of view to the event. With training in both art and biology, his expert eye allows him to create detailed and nuanced sculptures of the natural world. He created Kings of the Firestone Plateau after a close encounter in Yellowstone backcountry. He says, “A trio of bull elk were running in tight formation through the lodge pole pines with such majesty and poise that I will never forget the experience.”
“We are amazed every year at what our quick draw artists can accomplish in such little time. We are so proud to have them represent us this year,” the gallery says. “We can’t wait to see what everyone is going to create.”
