Kathryn Mapes Turner: Walking the Soul

Wyoming painter Kathryn Mapes Turner presents a solo show at her gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Kathryn Mapes Turner will be presenting a new solo show starting September 6 at Turner Fine Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The title of the show, Walking the Soul Back Home, will feature a number of new works, including bird paintings and landscape scenes.

Schwabaker’s Landing, oil, 6 x 6”

New works include A Raven’s World, an oil painting that shows a raven amid an abstracted field of red blotches that seems to instigate a response from the cawing subject. Barbara’s Bluebird also uses a more modern background, but this time a rust-hewn strip slides down the canvas with whispers of color dabbing at the edges. The bird itself is beautifully rendered with simple brushstrokes and forms of color.

Elsewhere in the show will be two landscapes, Crater Lake and Schwabaker’s Landing, both of which show Turner’s ability to convey mood and atmosphere within nature.

“Crater Lake is a plein air piece created while on a pack trip on my family’s ranch.  I love going to alpine lakes with their white-bark pines,” Turner says. “I painted this while everyone else was fishing for cutthroat. Thanks to the steep topography, I was able to get a painting spot that overlooked the water.”

Walking the Soul Back Home will take place concurrently with many of the events of Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, as well as additional artists events at Turner Fine Art.
