Back in the Saddle

The Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale returns to its full slate of events for the 2021 edition.

After hosting a hybrid edition of the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale in 2020, this year’s event in Cody, Wyoming, is “back in the saddle” with its full week of live parties, art shows and paint outs. The festivities will happen September 13 to 18 and includes the hallmark live auction on September 17 from 5 to 10 p.m. There are also hybrid components for those unable to attend, including a concierge bidding service.

Brandon Bailey, Heart of a Feather in All Kinds of Weather, oil, 31 x 42”

This year Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale, hosted by the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce and benefitting the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and other local arts organizations, is celebrating its 40th edition. On view and available to purchase will be artwork by 108 artists, many of whom have participated before along with 12 newcomers. The show has had longevity because of its small-town atmosphere and focus on some of the biggest names in the Western art world.

G. Russell Case, Autumn Salute, oil, 30 x 24"

“I always say that Cody is the draw,” says show director Kathy Thompson. “It’s the biggest reunion of the people who want to come to small-town America and be able to purchase what they want for their homes and businesses. This year out of the 108 artists, we have 70 artists coming. That’s an awesome thing to say, and they make a great effort to get here.”

Joshua Tobey, Stepping Stone, bronze, 55½ x 18 x 21"

The live auction, the headliner of the weekend, will be run by auctioneer Troy Black and includes paintings and sculptures from artists such as G. Russell Case, Joshua Tobey, Brandon Bailey, Thomas Kegler and Campbell Dosch, to name a few.

Tobey’s sculpture Stepping Stone is one piece available. It is the last edition of one of his most successful sculptures. Another work hitting the block is Bailey’s Heart of a Feather in All Kinds of Weather, depicting a nighttime thunderstorm, which the artist says “pays homage to the cowboy making his life on the western prairies.” Kegler’s landscape The Dawning, John 14:27 was inspired by a sunrise over Yellowstone Lake at the Geyser Basin that he saw while driving up to Yellowstone Canyon. He says, “The landscapes of Yellowstone Park have captivated me beyond words and provided a muse for endless compositions.”

Campbell Dosch, Apsaalooke, bronze, 37 x 18 x 12"

On view currently is the Scout’s Miniature Sale, which includes small-scale artwork from 72 of the artists in the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale. Collectors can travel to the museum or view art online, and make purchases through September 6. From September 14 to 16 is the Painting on the Porch event, while the Lunch & Lecture happens September 16 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. New this year is the Peter Hassrick Public Program Series, named after the last Western scholar. It will take place on September 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Colorful Canvases event is September 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the following day will be both the Quick Draw & Brunch and the concluding Patrons Ball.
