Highlights from Up-and-Coming Artists and Brand New Works Available in Studios and Galleries Around the Country

Chase Tafoya impresses collectors at Manitou Galleries in Santa Fe
Manitou Galleries recently announced it is offering paintings by up-and-coming Western artist Chase Tafoya, whose works are mostly realistic representations of the West, but also veer into dream-like visions of the land, sky and wildlife. The Oregon-based painter, who is largely self-taught, is a prominent tattoo artist and has been expanding into the West with his colorful works that speak to both the ruggedness and ethereal beauty of nature. “My desire to create comes from a constant search of how to evoke an emotion, and convey a message, by capturing the beauty that the American West constantly reveals to those who pay attention,” Tafoya says.  Paul Scott Gallery offers Brian Cote’s bold impressions of the Southwest
Arizona-based Brian Cote—pronounced “coe-tay”—has had a hot streak at Paul Scott Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, where his loosely painted impressionist works fly off the walls as they arrive into the gallery. A former art professor, Cote has been immersed in the energy and life in the desert, where he paints “thick, luscious tapestries of textures brimming with a sense of light and structure that evoke an emotional response to place and display a unique and contemporary view of the American Southwest.” See more of his work at www.paulscottgallery.com.

Don Woodard unveils new bas relief wood carvings showing desert scenes
Colorado carver Don Woodard has had a productive season in his studio, where he’s created a variety of new work. One of the new pieces is Utah Overlook, a mixed media work inspired from a scene located along Interstate 70 in Utah. “I was traveling to Paso Robles, California, to participate in the Cattlemen’s Western Art Show a couple of years ago when I stopped to take a break from driving and stretch my legs,” Woodard says. “As I walked around the rest area
I came upon this scene, took a few photos, then created this image after returning to the studio.” In addition to appearing in several summer shows, Woodard has also been showing new works on his website

Nathan Bennett to offer new patina paintings at Blue Rain Gallery
Opening August 27 at Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a new solo show for Nathan Bennett, who paints with patina. The gallery explains: “Since the early 1990s, Bennett has been refining his unique technique through study and experimentation. He uses a ‘hot’ method of applying liquified elements such as iron, silver, copper, bismuth, zinc and others while the bronze is hot. The medium does not just lie on the surface, but is fused into the pores of the bronze. Grinding, spraying, brushing, polishing and more all add signature elements to each artwork…Part artist, part alchemist, Nathan Bennett is a pioneer in his field.” The show runs through September 18.
