Highlights of recent sales in the Western art market.

Western Art Collector magazine has changed the way artists, galleries and collectors connect, and it has closed the gap that previously existed in the Western art market. Our SOLD! section is where we highlight these connections, as well as other sales occuring within the market. Within this monthly section you can read just some of the feedback pouring into our office from coast to coast about art sales, including some made directly from the pages of the magazine. You never know—your next art purchase could be in this issue.

Sarah Phippen wins Best of Show in Arizona
Colorado-based Western painter Sarah Phippen took home the Best of Show award at the Western Art Show & Sale, hosted by the Phippen Museum over Memorial Day weekend in Prescott, Arizona. The work, which promptly sold after the win, was titled A Mixed Bunch. The win is especially noteworthy for this show since the artist is the granddaughter of George Phippen, the namesake of the museum and one of the founders of the Cowboy Artists of America.  Modest estimates lead to big sale for Tom Lea work
Heritage Auctions had guessed Tom Lea’s Night Rider Getaway at between $4,000 and $6,000 for Heritage’s May 7 American Art Signature Sale. Estimates are best guesses based on many factors, so a sale can easily fall outside that range, which is what Night Rider Getaway did. The work eventually sold at $37,500, more than six times over its high estimate. The painting, done in watercolor and charcoal, features a slightly stylized rendering of the horse and rider, which is one of the sought-after qualities of Lea’s works.

John Moran Auctioneers sells work by Gaspard De Latoix
A magnificent work by relatively unknown Western painter Gaspard de Latoix recently sold at John Moran Auctioneers’ Art of the American West sale on May 25 in Monrovia, California. Two Indians on Horseback, painted in 1890, sold for $37,500, nearly double its high estimate of $20,000. The artist traveled from England to America in 1880 with his longtime partner, Isabell. “Upon discovering the West, the self-taught draftsman would dedicate his life and career to portraying New Mexico, the Plains Indians, and the like subject matter, many years before the Taos Society of Artists would be founded,” the auction house notes. The artist later moved back to England, where very little is known about him due to his nomadic lifestyle.

Excellent results for painter Kenneth Ferguson
Kenneth Ferguson had several images appear in the April issue, which resulted in a sale direct from the magazine’s pages. “As the collector and I talked, he mentioned that he was looking for a painting to complement another piece of mine, and was intrigued by A Maiden of the Mesas and Distant Thunder, which were both included in the article,” Ferguson says. “He asked for some time to think it over, and ultimately elected to purchase Distant Thunder. This gentleman enjoys collecting Western art and prefers to purchase in person. With no shows on my calendar at that time, the fact that Western Art Collector kept my paintings top of mind for him, via a venue he trusts and in print (versus internet) format he enjoys, was very helpful to making this sale happen. Thanks, Western Art Collector!” See more of Ferguson’s work atwww.kennethfergusonfineart.com. —
