Highlights of recent sales in the Western art market.

Western Art Collector magazine has changed the way artists, galleries and collectors connect, and it has closed the gap that previously existed in the Western art market. Our SOLD! section is where we highlight these connections, as well as other sales occuring within the market. Within this monthly section you can read just some of the feedback pouring into our office from coast to coast about art sales, including some made directly from the pages of the magazine. You never know—your next art purchase could be in this issue.

John Buxton has an early sale during the Oil Painters of America’s national show
To help promote his participation in the Oil Painters of America’s 2021 Juried Salon Show, painter John Buxton took out an ad in the May issue of Western Art Collector. The ad featured an image of his work Eagle Feathers, showing two Native American figures. A reader who already had one work by Buxton saw it and contacted the artist about purchasing it, but since the work was in the OPA show, which didn’t open until June 10, Buxton’s hands were tied. But persistence led to reward when the collector made inquiries with the host gallery. Buxton eventually received a message from his collector: “Hey, I now own another of your paintings!” See more of his artwork at www.buxtonart.com.

Major work by Dustin Van Wechel sell at Trailside Galleries
Trailside Galleries has had tremendous success with Colorado wildlife painter Dustin Van Wechel, whose works speak to the grandeur of animals in the beauty, and also chaos, of nature. Trailside’s success continued with the recent sale of Trailing the Herd, a large 40-by-30-inch work showing four wolves arranged on series of rocks on a grassy hill. Van Wechel, who is known for using trees and land features to create exciting compositions for his animals, is one of the leading wildlife painters working today.  Sold right from the pages of the magazine
In the May issue of Western Art Collector, we showed readers Crimson Cliffs by Arizona painter Clement Scott. The image captivated a reader, who made immediate inquiries about purchasing the work. And now it’s off the market! “Thanks to you guys, a gentleman in Washington spotted Crimson Cliffs in the May issue and contacted Belleza Gallery for the purchase,” Scott says. “He is really excited to add the piece to his collection.” That piece is not available anymore, but Scott has many more works available at www.clementscott.com. —
