Copley’s Sporting Sale features sporting art by revered artists, both historic and contemporary.

A total of 507 lots representing some of the best in sporting and decoy art will hit the auction block this July when Copley Fine Art Auctions holds its 2021 Sporting Sale. The summer sale will feature works by an array of esteemed artists, including historic artists Ogden M. Pleissner, John Clymer and Robert Lougheed, as well as a complete, hand-colored set of John James Audubon’s first royal octavo edition Birds of America. Contemporary artists will also be included, such as  Luke Frazier, Brett Smith, James Morgan, Eldridge Hardie, Steve Elliott, Amy Lay, Bonnie Marris, Roger Blum, John Terelak, Thomas Aquinas Daly, C. Ford Riley, C. D. Clarke, David A. Sibley and David Lazarus.Ken Carlson, A Feint Sound, oil on board, 30 x 45” Estimate: $30/50,000

Brett James Smith, Fishing by Camp, oil on canvas, 19 x 24” Estimate: $6/8,000

“We’ve seen consistent, strong interest in sporting and wildlife art throughout the last year. I am excited to see how our buying clients respond to the latest offering of fine art,” says Copley fine art specialist Leah Tharpe.

Major paintings in the sale include Pleissner’s oil Salmon Fishing, estimated to sell between $60,000 and $90,000, and Waiting for the Rise (est. $50/80,000). Additionally, Clymer’s Early Morning-White Tails and Tamarack is expected to fetch between $30,000 and $50,000. 

Bonnie Marris, Summer School, oil on canvas, 30 x 48” Estimate:  $12/18,000

Teton Melody, an oil by Frazier, is an expressive and textured piece of a grand elk, with visible brushstrokes and scratch marks. The piece has a presale estimate of $4,000 to $6,000. A Pause in the Hunt by 93-year-old artist Howard Terpning provides a view of a group of hunters in a moment of respite (est. $12/18,000). A Feint Sound by Ken Carlson, depicting a family of deer, is estimated to sell for $30,000 to $50,000, while Bonnie Marris’ family of foxes in Summer School is expected to fetch between $12,000 and $18,000. The Johnson Collection of American Bird Decoys, featuring shorebird decoys from preeminent collector Linda Johnson, is another major highlight in the upcoming sale.Ogden M. “The firm will have its work cut out for it, coming off one of its most successful auctions ever, tallying nearly $5 million in sales and a 98 percent sell-through rate in the Winter Sale,” says Copley Fine Art Auctions principal Stephen O’Brien Jr. “The upcoming Sporting Sale has a tremendous lineup. We just sent off to press two major catalogs that feature over 400 pages of the world’s finest sporting art.”
