Eight Seconds

A new photography exhibition at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West examines Black cowboys in America.

Now open at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, is the photography exhibition Eight Seconds: Black Cowboys in America. The special exhibition explores the American cowboy through the lens of photographer Ivan B. McClellan. Photographs by Ivan McClellan

The exhibition acknowledges the diversity within the American West. “Cowboys are fluid figures represented by many genders, races and cultures,” the museum notes, “and they’re more diverse than ever before.”

McClellan, who is based in Portland, Oregon, is a photographer and designer whose work that has been featured in numerous publications. He has also headed creative campaigns for Wrangler, Stetson, Boot Barn, Tecovas, Nike, Adidas, U.S. National Soccer, Oregon Ducks and Disney. McClellan’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country including, Oklahoma Contemporary, B.J. Spoke Gallery, ilon Art Gallery and the New York Center for Photographic Art. 

Eight Seconds remains on view at the museum through January 7, 2022. —
