Idaho-based Western painter C. Michael Dudash is no stranger to deadlines. The former illustrator was accustomed to meeting tight deadlines and turning high-quality artwork around quickly. It’s a skill he’s taking advantage of with his busy schedule that includes the Prix de West in June, the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in July, the Quest for the West in September and the Cowboy Artists of America annual show in November. They’re some of the biggest shows in the country, and Dudash is ready for them.

His work for the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction is a large painting titled Traveling an Ancient Land, showing a trio of riders coming up out of a canyon. “Whenever I have traveled the vast Southwest Territory of the United States, I am always overwhelmed by the sense of times past and endless distance,” he says. “My mind quickly goes to a place where I can see and imagine the cultures of old, which include the various Apache tribes of which I am most familiar. How they skillfully survived, and indeed flourished in this difficult environment, is to this day still a marvel to me. My hope is that Traveling an Ancient Land gives the viewer a similar feeling of timeless space and admiration for these wandering travelers.”

For the Quest for the West at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, Dudash will be presenting Dawn of the Red Moon, which features a campfire scene with numerous figures. “The occasion of a red moon, also known as a blood moon, is the backdrop for an early morning invocation by a holy man and fellow tribesmen,” Dudash says. “The painting is really about an interesting display of campfire light, smoke and the effect of changing light at the dawn of a new day.”

For Born to Lead, the artist “continues a common theme in my work, that of a tribute to the magnificent visual icon of a warrior placed against an interesting background,” he says. “I love to paint landscapes, especially rocks, waterfalls and flowing streams. Getting the interplay just right between all of the shapes, values, movement and color is a challenge that as a painter I always enjoy.”—
