Highlights of recent sales in the Western art market.

Immediate interest from the pages of the magazine

Painter Lori Putnam reports a recent sale that came about after a viewer saw an image in Western Art Collector: “It is always great to connect with a new collector. Almost immediately following the recent ad and editorial which included this piece,
I was contacted by someone who had seen the painting in the magazine. She wanted to know if it was still available. Rarely do these types of inquiries actually pan out, especially on larger works, but a few exchanges later, I am happy to report that Breakfast has gone to a lovely 1801 plantation in Bedford, Virginia.”

Sotheby’s continues the John Clymer hot streak

During the Sotheby’s sale Majestic America: Property from an Important Western Collector, Part II, the New York auction house sold a number of major works at high prices. One of the highlights was John Clymer’s Injuns, Injuns, an action scene showing trappers having an encounter with Native American fighters. The work had a high estimate of $100,000, but sold for $138,600. Clymer has had a streak of auction hits around the country, with no signs of slowing yet.

Heritage Auctions sells a magnificent portrait by John Hauser

A 1903 Native American portrait by John Hauser titled Chief Iron Trail, Sioux recently sold at March sale at Heritage Auctions. The work, with a high estimate of $3,500, sold for $15,000. Hauser is sometimes overshadowed by a colleague, Joseph Henry Sharp—the two artists were on the same boat to Europe in 1886, on their way to study art in Munich—yet Hauser’s work continues to resonate with collectors and see growth at auction.

Bruce Greene has a sell-out show at InSight Gallery in Texas

InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas, hosted a solo show for painter Bruce Greene in February. Not only were sales strong, the show completely sold out. Greene doesn’t do annual shows—in fact, major solo shows from the artist are somewhat rare—so when The Early Hours opened on February 5, collectors were ready. Stephen Harris over at InSight was thrilled: “Bruce is on cloud nine and we couldn’t be happier for him.”

Stunning Brent Cotton work sells at Settlers West’s miniatures show

Some of the highlights at Settlers West’s American Miniatures show in February in Tucson, Arizona, were Brent Cotton’s newest works showing people interacting with the abundance of nature around them. One of the works that sold was the 8-by-8-inch gem A Walk in the Woods, which shows Cotton’s gorgeous sense of color and composition.
