Hindman’s Western Paintings & Sculpture sale on May 6 includes a wide selection of historic and contemporary works of art.

On May 6, Hindman will host its next Western Paintings & Sculpture sale with an impressive array of lots that fit many niches of the market. The sale, beginning at 10 a.m., is comprised of approximately 400 lots including a Contemporary Native American Art session with 100 pieces from some of the most recognized artists. There also will be a 25-lot segment of the sale dedicated to the 20th Anniversary Fundraiser of the Couse Foundation. Several other private collections and estates will appear in the auction, as well artwork being sold to benefit the art collections at the University of Denver, the Allan Houser Foundation and the Grand Teton National Park Foundation.

"The auction is comprised of contemporary and historic Western and wildlife art, with over 50 works from the Estate of Norma and David McIntyre, of Los Angeles, California,” says Katherine Hlavin, Hindman’s director of Western art. “The estate includes paintings and bronzes by Sandy Scott, Sherri Sander, Luke Frazier, John Coleman, Scott Christensen, Jim Wilcox, Harry Jackson and Joe Beeler.”

The Taos Society of Artists are represented in the sale with two works by Eanger Irving Couse, including Watching the Rising Trout, which has a presale estimate of $70,000 to $90,000, and a Joseph Henry Sharp portrait titled Eagle Star (est. $25/35,000). There also will be works by contemporary artists associated with New Mexico including Louisa McElwain, whose abstract landscape Anvil IV (est. $20/30,000) will hit the market, and Paris-born artist Andrew Dasburg, who settled in Taos, with an untitled painting that is set at $20,000 to $30,000.

There are a number of cowboy paintings and sculptures coming to market in the sale, including works by Grant Speed, Herman Hansen and Charlie Dye. Among the notable lots is Hansen’s Untitled (Mustached Cowboy), which has an estimate of $15,000 to $25,000. Contemporary artists also continue to make a mark in this sale with Ed Mell’s Red Rock (est. $15/25,000), Z.S. Liang’s Sacred Light (est. $15/25,000), Dave McGary’s Bounty of Gray Hawk (est. $6/8,000) and Luke Frazier’s Driving the Herd (est. $3/5,000) being noteworthy lots.

In the Native American segment of the auction—including paintings, jewelry, pottery and textiles—collectors will find Fritz Scholder’s American Portrait #43 (est. $18/24,000) and John Nieto’s Plains Warrior (est. $7/9,000). Also available will be work by Tony Abeyta, Kevin Red Star, Earl Biss, Dan Namingha, Tammy Garcia, Diego Romero, Don Lelooska, Les Namingha, Nathan Youngblood, Charles Loloma, Victor Beck and Richard Chavez.
