Miniature Masterpieces

Each summer for the past 12 years, Coeur d’Alene Galleries in Idaho has mounted its annual Miniatures by the Lake exhibition and sale. The show, in its 13th year, continues to highlight the quality and variety of artwork available from some of Western art world’s emerging and established artists. “Even though it’s a small works show, collectors have come to expect quality in these small works and the artists have lived up to the billing. Collectors have always loved the variety of works in our miniature show, and this year will be no different,” says Buddy Le, owner of the gallery. “With over 80 artists and nearly 145 works, there’s something for everyone.”

Every year new artists are introduced, while favorites such as Brent Cotton, Luke Frazier, C. Michael Dudash, Chad Poppleton and Randy Van Beek have shown works since the event’s inception.

Artwork this year will include Abigail Gutting’s Lazy Summer Days. “The focus of this piece is on the light and shadow caused by midday sunlight in the heat of a July afternoon,” says the artist. “Compositionally, the position of the three horses in relationship to each other worked together with the light to create the story of the piece—three roughstock horses lazily waiting through the heat of a summer afternoon.”

Collin Bogle, Winter Black Wolf, mixed media, 12 x 9½”

Collin Bogle’s mixed media work Winter Black Wolf was inspired by the contrast of the dark wolf against the bright snow. “I also like how the snow reflects on the eyes making them stand out,” he says. “This beautiful wolf is obscure but not.”

Mark Susinno, Brown Trout & Longnose Dace, oil on linen on panel, 9 x 12”

Mark Susinno’s Brown Trout & Longnose Dace was developed by putting together multiple photographs to obtain the ideal composition. “I frequently depict trout either about to take an artificial fly or the natural insect a fly is meant to represent,” he says, “but for this painting I wanted to portray a big brown that got big by eating other fish.”

This year’s show opens September 11 and will have the reception and sale on September 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. “Our reception and sale has always been the highlight of the event with an average of two dozen artists in attendance, and the fixed-price draw format always creates a lot of energy,” says Le. “Unfortunately, with today’s circumstances, everyone’s safety is our priority, so we encourage collectors to request a catalog and visit the exhibition virtually on our website. You don’t have to be present to win your favorite painting, so visit us virtually and put in for the draw.”
