The Oil Painters of America, founded by Shirl Smithson nearly 30 years ago, has grown into a national organization of 3,400 artist members representing the art of traditional oil painting. This year, the OPA celebrates its 29th National Juried Exhibition in a virtual format, running August 17 through September 19, hosted by RS Hanna Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas.

The 2020 event will feature more than 200 works of art in a vast range of subjects, from figurative works and portraits, to wildlife, landscapes and interior scenes. Among the many talented artists whose work was selected to be a part of the show are landscape, botanical and wildlife painter Lucy Dickens, and Patty Voje, who paints Western landscapes and livestock, as well as cityscapes and still lifes in the alla prima style. These 200-plus works, including Dickens’ vibrant closeup of a prickly pear cactus in bloom, Arizona Rose, and Voje’s portrait of a cow, Fighter Girl, will hang alongside artwork submitted by OPA Master Signature members.
An online awards ceremony will take place September 10 at 6:30 p.m., in which the prize-winning pieces selected by awards juror Rose Frantzen will be announced. In addition, the wet paint competition and convention will be held in a virtual format as well. The wet paint competition takes place September 11 and 12, with John Pototschnik serving as the Juror of Awards.
