Located in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth art market, Southwest Gallery will be holding its first Western Exhibition Weekendthis October, an event the gallery envisions as the beginning of an annual tradition. Featuring established artists as well as rising talent in the genre, the exhibition will feature a wide range of interpretations of the West, from cowboys to desert landscapes to depictions of Native Americans and more.

“As a figurative artist with a love for animals, the West lends itself to be a great fit for me,” says Phil Beck, who will be showcasing his recent oil What’s Your Hurry in the upcoming show. “I was fortunate enough to capture this scene of cattle being driven across water, two of my favorite themes. It still amazes me to see how an experienced cowhand can handle such large animals with ease.”

Another piece depicting cattle and the quintessential ranching experience is Xiang Zhang’s Palo Duro Cattle Drive, a painting the artist says depicts a fantasy of a bygone era of Texas. “I learned that the Goodnight-Loving Trail was used in the late 1860s for the large-scale movement of Texas Longhorns. Palo Duro Canyon’s red rock as the background symbolizes the tough involvement and [how] the brave Texas cowboys drive the cattle from south to north,” says Zhang. “I applied the palette knife and bold brushstrokes to this painting and expressed the cattle drive’s toughness.”

The forthcoming exhibition will also feature a side-profile portrait of a Native American elder by Greg Erway, an action-packed scene of another cattle drive by Robert Hagan, a group of cowboys on horseback passing through a canyon by Tom Dorr and much more.
“Our goal is to create an exhibition that not only celebrates the rich traditions of Western art but also highlights the incredible artists shaping the genre today,” says Southwest Gallery director Bob Malenfant. “We hope this event becomes a lasting and highly anticipated tradition for years to come.”

In total, the Western Exhibition Weekend will host more than 25 artists with 50-plus paintings and sculpture and is set for Saturday, October 17, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. —
