Billy Schenck painting soars in Scottsdale
In April, Scottsdale Art Auction sold Billy Schenck’s Blood on the Horizon for $216,000, more than triple the high estimate. The sale set a new world record for the New Mexico artist. (The same work set an earlier world record in 2021 at the sale.) On August 22, the auction house again offered a Schenck painting, this one of a cowboy under desert clouds. The work, titled Under the Sheltering Sky, sold for $72,000, nearly doubling its high estimate of $40,000. The artist has been on a hot streak that shows no immediate signs of slowing. Other top works sold at the August online sale include pieces by Martin Grelle, E. Martin Hennings, John Nieto, Will James and Ed Mell, whose works are also seeing a lot of action from bidders.

Lusher Fine Art sells Peter Hurd work
When it comes to ranch and farm scenes, few artists are as iconic as Peter Hurd, whose works, many of them in egg tempera, offer incredible views of ranch life within the American Southwest. Lusher Fine Art hosted an annual sale on August 4 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and within the lots was Hurd’s Remembered Spring (Springtime), which sold over estimates at $18,500. Other top lots in the sale were works by Wilson Hurley, Bonnie Marris and Ray Swanson. —
