Wolf of the West

Ray Tigerman unveils his debut novel at Western Spirit museum in Arizona.

Arizona-based painter Ray Tigerman will celebrate the release of his debut novel, A Knight on Wolf Island, with a party and book release at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West in Scottsdale, Arizona. The October 22 bash will not only feature the release of the book and a book signing, but also food and drinks, as well as a live concert from country singer Wade Hayes.

The event, which takes place from 5 to 9 p.m., will unite many different forms of art. For Tigerman, Western Spirit was the ideal location for the party. “When I began thinking about the event, I didn’t want it to simply be a traditional book signing. I proposed something that would bring together all the different parts of my creative life—art, music, storytelling and, of course, the release of my debut novel,” he says. “Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West felt like the perfect place to do that. My career as an artist has always been deeply connected to the American West, and even though A Knight on Wolf Island ventures into supernatural, that same sense of landscape, mythology, resilience and storytelling runs through the novel.”

In a synopsis released by the author, the book involves Native American mythology. “A Knight on Wolf Islandis a supernatural survival novel set in the mid-1800s. It follows Tayen, a young half-Navajo blacksmith aboard a whaling ship who becomes stranded alone on a remote and mysterious island. What begins as a fight against the elements—hunger, brutal weather and isolation—quickly becomes something much darker when he realizes he isn’t alone. Drawing from Indigenous mythology, the story becomes a battle not only for survival but against forces Tayen doesn’t fully understand.”
