The West: Preserved and Still Inspiring

Letter from the Publishers

Welcome to the October issue of Western Art Collector! This issue is dedicated to our great Western museums across the country. Museums are places where we experience the story of the American West through the eyes of artists across generations. They celebrate the artists who painted our history and give us an opportunity to see firsthand how Western art has evolved over the centuries.

Our museum coverage spans the country, from the Denver Art Museum to the A.R. Mitchell Museum, Booth Western Art Museum, Briscoe Western Art Museum, Phippen Museum and Sid Richardson Museum, along with many more. Starting on Page 97, you can peruse more than 30 pages of historic exhibitions and museum shows worth adding to your travel list this year. And if that isn’t enough history, we have more!

October also marks the 100th anniversary of Charlie Russell’s passing, and Michael Clawson has rolled out the red carpet for the celebration. His editor’s letter on the next page is a tribute to this great artist. Our cover (and much of this issue) is dedicated to celebrating Russell and his extraordinary legacy. He is not simply a historic Western artist. A century after his passing, his work continues to influence and inspire many of today’s top Western artists. His storytelling, characters and authentic vision of the West remain as meaningful today as ever.

The story of Western art is not only found in museums, it continues to be written by the artists working today. Beginning on Page 61, our gallery previews offer a look at exceptional new works, upcoming exhibitions and the artists carrying Western traditions forward in their own unique ways. It is a wonderful bridge between the history celebrated throughout this issue and the art being created right now. We bring the past and present together beautifully. Visit a museum, discover an artist, find a work you love and add more Western art history to your own collection.
