Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Kevin Tice

Growing up in rural eastern Nevada, Kevin Tice spent most of his free time outdoors—hiking, hunting, fishing and exploring. That early connection to the land has stayed with him and continues to influence the subjects he chooses to paint. “Now living in Southern Utah, I enjoy visiting the West’s well-known places, but I am often more interested in the quieter scenes found along the way,” Tice says. “Sometimes it is a certain cloud formation, a distant patch of light, or an unexpected arrangement of shapes that makes me stop and take notice.”

The artist continues, “I gather ideas through plein air studies, sketches and photographs, then work through the composition in my studio. Light and atmosphere are especially important to me. I enjoy the way changing light can completely alter the mood of a familiar place or turn an ordinary scene into something memorable. Working in oil allows me to build layers of color, adjust edges, and make the subtle temperature changes that help create a sense of depth and distance.”

New works include Below Rock Chuck Peak, Rocky Bend and Sunset at Strawberry Point. Each uses light and color to bring the location alive.

“I am not trying to make a literal record of the landscape,” Tice says. “I want to capture what it felt like to be there. My hope is that the finished painting gives viewers a reason to pause and perhaps reminds them of their own connection to the outdoors.” —
